United States Peace Corps (1988-90) - James served as a volunteer in a rural
high school, Butha-Buthe,  in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa.
He taught math and science (physics, biology) at the junior and senior high school
level, administered by the
Cambridge Overseas School Syndicate.  He was
instrumental in planning the curriculum during his second year of service,
subdividing the classes into core and elective classes, and working out the
schedule for the following year.  He introduced a three-dimensional approach to
teaching descriptive geometry in the senior level mathematics class, and also
inaugurated an arts and crafts class at the junior high school level, which also
included acting out the roles in the plays the students were reading in English
class.

He helped to raise money for the building of new classrooms at his high school
and oversaw the construction of these classrooms during his second year of
service.  James also contributed to the Peace Corps Newsletter, designing covers
and submitting articles.  But, what James valued most were the relationships he
formed with his students and fellow teachers at Butha-Buthe High School.
