Manitou Islands, Lake Michigan (1988) - James supervised a
summer field recording team which documented the lighthouse
and lifesaving station on the Manitou Islands, which are part of
the
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.  The historic
structures date back to the mid 19th century, when shipping
traffic greatly increased on Lake Michigan and a
lighthouse was
deemed necessary to warn vessels of the sand shoals, where
several ships had run aground.  It was built on South Manitou
Island.  The lifesaving station, pictured below, is located on
North Manitou Island and served as a valuable rescue center for
stranded ships for many years.
