William Enston Home (1994-95) – This project evolved
from a summer field recording project begun the year
before by the Historic American Buildings Survey.  I was
commissioned by
The Housing Authority of the City of
Charleston and the Historic Charleston Foundation to
complete the survey of the Enston Home complex, a late
nineteenth century retirement community in North
Charleston.  The homes, main chapel and supporting
buildings were modeled along Romanesque lines but
seemed to owe their genesis to the ideal Victorian
community.  The buildings had fallen into disrepair and
the Charleston Housing Authority planned on
refurbishing them and adding new homes to the site.  I
was retained by the Housing Authority as a consultant
architect for the rehabilitation and enlargement of the
complex.
